Separation Rumour 009*

Goodbye to the asparagus season 2017!

The start of the asparagus harvest is heavily dependent on the weather. In most years, the first white asparagus appear in our shops at the end of March or in early April. But when does the asparagus season come to an end? Traditionally, people stopped eating asparagus by 24 June, which is St John's Day. Even today, no more asparagus spears are harvested after this date. In theory, there is nothing to stop us from eating the much-loved vegetable well into the summer and autumn. Growers know however that harvesting beyond St John's Day would weaken the asparagus plants, leading to a poor crop in the following year. The plants need around 100 days to grow into airy bushes to make sure that the roots can survive frosty winters and sprout again in spring. Declaring St John's Day the last day of the asparagus season is thus a wise tradition adopted by all growers who want to protect their crop. By limiting the harvesting period, they make sure that we can all enjoy plenty of delicious asparagus spears year after year.

So, there are only nine months left to the start of the asparagus season 2018 …
